Adena and Hopewell Cultures' Earthworks in Indiana

The first inhabitants of the Madison County area were the Adena, a hunter/gather society. The Adena date back to 1,000 B.C. and left their mark on the area by constructing mounds. The mounds, now a part of Indiana Department of Natural Resource's Mounds State Park, were constructed for astronomical observations. Take the walking tour below of Mounds State Park to learn more about the park's historic mounds.
